There are many ways to get involved with the future of Sandpoint.  A great start is to be informed about what is going on. City Council has regular meetings on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month at 5:30 PM, in the Council chambers.  If you can't make it to the meeting  a live web stream is available to watch.  You can also sign up for eNotifications to have calendar and news items sent to your inbox.  Council and committee meeting minutes are also available to review.   

If you are ready to take on a more hands on approach you should volunteer and  join an advisory committee.  Advisory committees are formed to provide research, study, discussion and recommendations on specific issues or a scope of issues as requested by City Council.  They also provide an opportunity for citizens to actively participate in the decision-making process, which is a critical element for an open and responsive government.  These committees add great value to our efforts to provide efficient and effective governance.

There are many local civic organizations that would love your participation.

Bonner County has many councils and committees available to participate in as well.

Idaho@Play is a state wide initiative which brings AmeriCorps members and community volunteers together to promote play as a way to combat childhood obesity.

LISTENING SESSIONS ANNOUNCED TO DETERMINE THE FATE OF THE SANDPOINT BID

Sandpoint – At its April 24, 2017 meeting, the Sandpoint City Council authorized an independent review of the structure and performance of the Sandpoint Business Improvement District and an intensive public input process to inform the City Council decision as to its future.

The City has retained Roger Woodworth of Mindset Matters, an independent consulting firm with significant strategic planning and economic development expertise, to engage business owners within the BID in: (1) assessing the current situation and (2) developing consensus recommendations as to any changes, including potentially termination.  The evaluation will consider:  governance and representation, fee structure, boundaries, types of businesses within the boundaries, participant engagement and perceptions, administrative effectiveness, project planning, selection and results, and other factors, as identified.

The process will begin with several listening sessions.  Each session will include a short presentation on the Boise State University survey results and provide time to receive BID members’ thoughtful input.  Later this summer, workshops will be held to report back and consider the information gathered.  Workshop participants will consider the full range of BID alternatives – revision, termination, or continuation as is.  Recommendations developed during the workshops will be circulated for review by the business owners in the BID prior to finalizing a report to the Sandpoint City Council to inform its decision on the future of the BID.

“It is critical that all of the businesses in the BID participate in this effort so we can get to the end result that reflects the desires and needs of the majority of the businesses within the district.  It is clear that the current model and structure is not working,” said Jennifer Stapleton, City Administrator.

May 15                 2 – 4 p.m. – Little Panida Theater (300 N. First Avenue)

                              7 – 9 p.m. -   Pend d’Oreille Winery  (301 Cedar Street, #101)

May 16                 7 – 9 a.m. - Cedar Street Bistro (334 N. First Avenue in Cedar Street Bridge)

                              11 – 1 p.m.  - Jalapeno’s banquet room (314 N 2nd Avenue)

May 22                 2 – 4 p.m. – Little Panida Theater (300 N. First Avenue)

                              7 – 9 p.m.  - Pend d’Oreille Winery (301 Cedar Street, #101)

May 23                 7 – 9 a.m.  - Cedar Street Bistro (334 N. First Avenue in Cedar Street Bridge)

The City Council intends to make its decision regarding the fate of the BID in late July or August.  In the meantime, the City of Sandpoint has assumed temporary administration of the BID.  The flower basket program will be the only active program of the BID until the Council decision is made.  Flowers will be delivered May 18th and hung in time for the first big City-wide event of the summer season -- Lost in the 50’s.
