Gretchen Hellar |
Gretchen Hellar was born in Detroit, Michigan
and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After obtaining
degrees in social work and sociology from Michigan State
University, she taught at the University of Hawaii and
was a Research Associate at the Center for Social
Research and Development located at the University of
Denver.
In 1973 she moved to Kootenai County where she became
executive director of North Idaho Special Services
Agency—an agency with the mission of serving low-income
residents of the five northern counties. In 1978 she
co-founded Available Hardware Supply (AHS) with three
partners. After 12 years AHS grew to 62 employees and
had branches in Seattle and Boise.
Upon selling AHS she moved to a cabin on Schweitzer
Mountain and in 1993 moved into the City of Sandpoint.
She became active in the arts community serving as
treasurer of Pend Oreille Arts Council (POAC), in the
human rights community where she served as president, as
treasurer of the Bonner County Human Rights Task Force,
and was the first president of the Kinnikinnick Chapter
of the Idaho Native Plant Society. She was also co-chair
of the Sandpoint Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee.
In addition, she pursued her new found interests in
painting watercolors, sustainable gardening, as well as
experiencing all the joy that living in Sandpoint
provides. |

Email Michael
Boge |
Michael
Boge (council president) born and raised in
Spokane, WA, has been a resident of North Idaho for over 24
years. A graduate of Washington State University Michael
holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication.
Michael began serving his fourth term on the city council in
January of 2008 and was elected council president in January
of 2008. He has previously served twice as Council President
along with serving as chair of the Public Safety Committee
as well as the Administrative Committee. Michael was the
chairman of the Sand Creek Master Plan Committee and CDAC,
the Citizens Design and Advisory Committee for the Sand
Creek Byway.
Michael is married to Anavel Boge. They have a daughter
Laura. A businessman, Michael owns four drive-in restaurants
in North Idaho as well as Mountain Fever, a production
company. A very active volunteer in the Sandpoint community,
Michael is a past nine year member of the Panida Theater
Board of Directors and an 11 year member of the Schweitzer
Ski Patrol. He also hosts the “Sunday Brunch” program on
KPND, 95.3 FM as well being a member of the Inland Empire
Chapter of the Antique and Classic Wood Boat Society along
with being a member of the Iron Butt Association a group of
long distance motorcycle riders. Michael and his wife Anavel
also founded “The Satipo Kids Project” in 2006, a program in
Satipo, Peru that enables school age children to attend
school. Currently the project supports 34 children. |

Lockwood |

Steve
Lockwood and his wife Molly O’Reilly moved to the area
in mid-1999 after sailing the South Pacific for four
years aboard their 31’ sailboat, “Halo.” Family
has lived in the Sandpoint area since the mid-seventies
and four grandchildren grew up here.
Steve was
born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He spent most of
his working career there, with the Bell Telephone
System, retiring as Operations Manager.
Steve was
elected to City Council in 2005. He is currently Chair
of the Public Works Committee. Volunteer activities
have included serving as Chairman of Sandpoint’s Phase
I Downtown Revitalization (2001-2) and chairing the City
of Sandpoint Planning and Zoning Commission (2003-4). He
also served on the Lake Pend Oreille School District
Board.
Steve’s
hobbies include sailing, skiing, piano, and an interest
in affordable housing. He has recently developed
“Park Cottages,” an award winning, close-in housing
project.

Email Helen
Newton |

Helen (Method)
Newton has been a resident of Bonner
County since February 1947. A 1959 graduate of Sandpoint High School, she attended
the University of Idaho for two years. She has been married to Skip Newton since 1961.
They have two daughters and four grandchildren. Skip retired in 1993 after 32 years
with the U.S. Forest Service.
Helen was appointed
Sandpoint's city clerk by Mayor Sally Cupan and served in that position from August 1, 1981
through July 31, 2005. Her position also included administrative assistant to the
mayor and director of human resources. She served in the administrations of mayors Cupan, Ebbett,
Chaney, Sheffler, Chaney, Sawyer, Graves and Miller. She was the third city clerk in Idaho to obtain
certification through the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.
She and Skip have been active
members of the United Methodist Church for over 50 years and of the Bonner County Historical Society
for many years. She is a lifetome sustaining member of Friends of the Library. Helen has been a member of PEO
Chapter V since 1968. She was named an Outstanding Young Woman of America in 1966
Elected to the Board of Directors
of Bonner General Hospital and Pend Oreille Hospital District in 1969, she was re-elected several times,
retiring from those boards in 1984. In 2004-05 she served on the facilities assessment committee for
the Lake Pend Oreille School District.
Retirement allows more time to quilt, play bridge,
read and devote time to serving on the city council.
She currently sits on the council's Administrative
Committee and is council liaison to the Tree Committee,
and the Bicycle Advisory Committee.

Hawkins |
Doug
Hawkins
is a 5th Generation Sandpoint area resident. He was born
and raised in the Greater Sandpoint Area and graduated
from Sandpoint High School in 1998. He attended the
University of Idaho where he obtained two BS degrees:
one in Economics and the other in Marketing. After
college he spent three years traveling the country,
living in six states and has now visited all 50.
Doug returned to the Sandpoint area in 2005 to work for
Litehouse Foods, which has been owned and operated by
the Hawkins family since 1963, and attend Gonzaga
University. He has four living generations of family in
the Sandpoint area and enjoys spending time with family,
walking, hiking, playing in the lake and traveling. He
now serves as a Product Manager for Litehouse and will
be finishing his Masters in Business Administration at
Gonzaga the fall of 2007.
He was appointed to the City Council in September of
2007 and was elected to a four-year term in November
2007. He serves on the Administrative Committee
and is council liaison to the Mayor's Youth Council
board. |

Snedden |
Stephen
Snedden is a third generation resident of
Sandpoint and Bonner County. After graduating from
Sandpoint High School, he attended college at Seattle
Pacific University and finished with degrees in computer
science and political science. Stephen attended law
school at Pepperdine University and now practices law in
Sandpoint as an attorney with Featherston Law Firm, Chtd.
His practice is focused on business and real estate law.
Stephen enjoys skiing Schweitzer in the winter. During
windy summer days you can find him sailing Lake Pend
Oreille aboard his eighteen (18) foot Hobie Cat; Judge,
Jury and Executioner.

Carrie Logan |
Carrie
Logan was raised in a small Central California
farming town, moved as a young adult to Northern
California where she graduated from college, worked and
started her family. She moved to Sandpoint in 1989.
During her work career locally as a mental health
specialist, she was an active volunteer in the community
including 6 years on the Sandpoint Planning and Zoning
Commission as a member and chairperson. She has also
served her community as a board member of Community
Cancer Services and is a current Vice-President of the
Sandpoint Soccer Association in addition to being a
weekly volunteer at local schools.
Two of Carrie’s six grandchildren live locally as do two
of her sons. Her oldest daughter and her family live in
Northern California, and her youngest daughter and
family live in Washington. Carrie’s husband Dan works
locally in the construction industry. |
