meetingCommissions and committees are formed to provide research, study, discussion and recommendations on specific issues or a scope of issues as requested by City Council.  They also provide an opportunity for citizens to actively participate in the decision-making process, which is a critical element for an open and responsive government.  They add great value to our efforts to provide efficient and effective governance.

To be considered for an appointment to a City commission or advisory committee, please complete an application and submit it to the Mayor.


Planning and Zoning Commission

The Sandpoint Planning and Zoning Commission performs such functions and duties as required by, and in furtherance of, the planning and zoning matters set forth in the Local Planning Act of 1975 and contained in Idaho Code.


Arts Commission

The Sandpoint Arts Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and City Council to create and maintain an atmosphere conducive to the fullest expression of all forms of the arts in order to enrich the lives of all Sandpoint citizens and visitors through public art.


Historic Preservation Commission

The Sandpoint Historic Preservation Commission promotes the educational, cultural, economic, and general welfare of the public of the City of Sandpoint through identification, evaluation, designation, and protection of those buildings, sites, districts, areas, structures, and objects that reflect significant elements of the city's, the state's, and the nation's historic, architectural, archaeological, and cultural heritage.


Parks and Recreation Commission

The Sandpoint Parks and Recreation Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the director of the Parks and Recreation Department, the Mayor, and City Council to aid in the process of effective, responsible, and efficient government by: 

  1. Marshaling and channeling the resources available in the community to complement the judgment of city council and staff
  2. Providing a forum for dialog and public input
  3. Providing mechanisms appropriate to ascertain facts and discern views
  4. Broadening citizen participation in self-government

Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee

The Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee advises the Mayor, City Council, and Planning and Zoning Commission on pedestrian and bicycle issues throughout and in the vicinity of the City of Sandpoint; makes recommendations regarding pedestrian and bicycle transportation (and ways to encourage such transportation); provides suggestions and information on location of and methods to establish walkways and bikeways; provides suggestions that will increase the safety of all transportation modalities; and assists with community education regarding pedestrian and bicycle issues.


Sustainability Committee

The Sandpoint Sustainability Committee is a group of devoted local citizens aiming to help the city meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability to meet the needs of future generations.  The Committee acts in an advisory capacity to the mayor and the city council to aid in the process of effective, responsible, and efficient government, with the goal of enhancing connectivity, promoting good stewardship, ensuring resilience and fostering socioeconomic health.


Tree Committee

The Sandpoint Tree Committee is advisory in nature, with the purpose of providing advice to the Mayor, City Council, and City Forester as to the preservation, protection and management of the community forest of the City.
