Lieutenant Dressel began his career in law enforcement in 1987 with the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office as a Reserves Deputy.  He was hired full time as a Detention Deputy for the Bonner County Sheriff’s Department and later transferred to the road as a full time Patrol Deputy.  In 1992, Lt. Dressel was hired by the Sandpoint Police Department as a Patrol Officer and since then has served in the Patrol Division, Narcotics Division, and General Investigations.  In 2014 he was promoted to Lieutenant where he oversees the daily operations of the Detectives and Patrol Divisions.  


The Criminal Investigation Division of the Sandpoint Police Department is committed to excellence during criminal investigations through innovative and efficient use of our resources. We are committed to achieving the greatest gains, preventing the greatest losses and bringing offenders to justice by diligently seeking to discover the truth, deterred neither by fear nor prejudice.

The Criminal Investigation Division is broken into two groups, General Investigations and Narcotic Investigations.  There are a total of 4 investigators, three assigned to General Investigations and one for Narcotic Investigations.  

The role of the Narcotic Detective is to investigate all narcotic related cases from possession of an illegal substance  to manufacturing and sale of an illegal substance.

They are also responsible for:

  • Tracking motorcycle gangs
  • Tracking Sex offenders
  • Cyber crime processing
    • Cell phone processing
    • Computers processing
  • Drug Court
  • Community awareness programs such as “Dangers of Drugs”    

The role of the General Detective is to investigate all other crimes ranging from vandalism to homicide.  They are also responsible for the following:      

  • Tracking Pawns
  • Background Investigations
  • Tracking Resent Parolees
  • Internal Affairs Investigation
