The Water Department operates the City's water treatment and distribution and has nine full time/part-time employees. For distribution, the city performs the repair and preventive maintenance for the water system such as mains, fire hydrants, water meters, pumps, and valves. It monitors the water system 24 hours a day, provides radio communications for field personnel and information on waterline locations to the general public. For water treatment, the city operates two surface water treatment plants. The Little Sand Creek water treatment plant is on Schweitzer Road and the Lake Pend Oreille Water treatment plant is on Sandpoint Avenue north of City Beach. The treatment capacity for Little Sand Creek is up to 4 million gallons a day and the Lake plant capacity is 10 million gallons a day.  Water is distributed to 2 -two million gallon reservoirs before being delivered to over 4000 connections in Sandpoint, Ponderay, Kootenai, Dover and unincorporated areas of Bonner County surrounding Sandpoint.

New Water Treatment Plant

The new treatment plant was completed in 2012 and increases capacity from 3 million gallons per day to 10 million gallons per day. The City selected membrane treatment technology from the Pall Corporation of New York.  Membranes are a positive barrier between the raw, untreated water and water delivered to customers.  Parasites, viruses and bacteria are physically separated from the water through the membrane treatment process.
